Black Nativity is a special
creation; what Hughes' has called the
"Gospel Song-Play." It's an
African-American retelling of the story
of the birth of Jesus. The play is
highlighted by such classic Christmas
fare as "Joy to the World," "Go Tell it
on the Mountain," and "Oh Come All Ye
Faithful." The show also features moving
gospel renditions of spirituals like "Go
Where I Send Thee," "Brand New Life,"
and "God be with You." Black Nativity
will offer an energy filled evening of
song, story, and joy.
The play is directed by Boyd Vance and
stars Marc Banks, Jennifer Cumberbatch,
Billy Harden, Sheila King Knight, Curtis
Polk, Atwell Tinnon, Dawn Williams Ross,
and Janice Jean,
“Surely among the blessed holiday
treats…..singing, clapping and swaying.
It would be hard to find a more
heartfelt and heartwarming expression of
the season.” - Michael Barnes,

TWILIGHT LOS ANGELES
February 18-27, 2005
Anna Deavere Smith uses the verbatim
words of people who experienced the Los
Angeles riots to expose and explore the
devastating human impact of that event.
From nine months of interviews with more
than two hundred people, Smith has
chosen the voices that best reflect the
diversity and tension of a city in
turmoil: a disabled Korean man, a white
male Hollywood talent agent, a
Panamanian immigrant mother, a teenage
black gang member, a macho
Mexican-American artist, Rodney King's
aunt, beaten truck driver Reginald
Denny, former Los Angeles police chief
Daryl Gates and other witnesses,
participants and victims. A work that
goes directly to the heart of the issues
of race and class, TWILIGHT ruthlessly
probes the language and the lives of its
subjects, offering stark insight into
the complex and pressing social,
economic and political issues that
fueled the flames in the wake of the
Rodney King verdict.

KING HEDLEY II
June 3-12, 2005
August Wilson's King Hedley II is a huge
play: huge in its issues, huge in it's
humanity and immense in its tragedy.
Although not flawless, Penumbra
Theatre's superb ensemble acting in a
powerful production swept me deep into
the world of the play's six characters.
Hedley II 's issues concern the effect
on lives when a community loses its
connections to its cultural roots, the
cycle of failure and violence in
generations of poverty, and what happens
to a man when he's emasculated by a
majority that treats him like dirt and
expects him to be no better than dirt
for the rest of his life.
Set in the Hill district in Pittsburgh
in 1985, where Hedley wants to overcome
the hardship and oppression he's been
exposed to and make a better life for
himself, his mother, and his wife Tonya
(Viola Davis). His immediate goal is to
save up the $10,000 he needs to make a
down payment on a video store he wants
to rent with money from selling stolen
refrigerators with his friend Mister.
