  • JUNE 20 | A FUNDRAISER AND SHOWCASE OF YOUTH SPOKEN WORD
WHEW! What a show! The 2008 Austin Under 21 Poetry Slam Off was one of the hottest, most exciting shows we’ve had! The competition was the stiffest, the scores were the tightest, and the four youth poets who emerged as winners are already hard at work preparing to compete against approximately 45 other teams next month at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Washington, DC.

If you missed the Slam Off – never fear! This showcase of youth poetry will feature Team Austin 2008 as well as other Austin area youth poets, in a fundraiser to help get the team to Washington, DC. There will be solo pieces as well as some ‘fresh off the press’ group pieces! This is a great opportunity to get a sneak preview of what the team will be performing at BNV.

With the rising costs of airfare (and now baggage!), we need all of you to come out and support the team. We encourage you to get a group together and come out for an exciting night of spoken word featuring the top youth poets the City of Austin has to offer! CDs of the 2007 Austin Under 21 Poetry Slam Team will also be available so you can take home the youth phenomenon to share with family and friends.  Join us - Friday, June 20th, 6pm at Ruta Maya World Headquarters, 3601 S. Congress, D-200. $10 cover, $5 students.

juneteenth - are you for it or ag'in it?
i definitely think we should continue to celebrate juneteenth in recognition of the ending of slavery.
seems to me we should celebrate it on the actual date slavery ended; versus celebrating the date 2 years later when word reached texas.
im not sure on this one. i can see both sides.
