  • JUNE 26 | DARREN CARTER THE PARTY STARTER AT CAP CITY COMEDY THIS WEEK
Darren Carter is a man of many talents, accomplishments, surprises--and nicknames. Let’s take ‘em in reverse order. Among the nicknames or aliases he’ll answer to, or at least be unsurprised to hear uttered in his direction: “Rooster,” “Fireball,” “Opie,” “Gallo” & “Shady Side.”

The “surprises”? Well, the most notable one--relative to most of those nicknames which obviously acknowledge that Carter is a fair-skinned, freckled redhead--is that he’s Latino: Indeed, as his bio notes--and, not coincidentally, our first awareness of him on any significant level of the comedy--his “first big break” was appearing at the inaugural Latino Laugh Festival in San Antonio (some of which was broadcast by Showtime).

Along those lines--as we move into the “accomplishments” part of our opening spiel--he also made a couple of appearances on Galavision’s well-known and well-watched show, “Que Locos.” Certainly Carter’s most prominent stand-up TV credit is “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.”

He’s also a solid presence on the BET network, having performed several times on its stand-up showcase “Comic View” and become a regular player on its variety show “The Way We Do it.” Plus, there’s some movie credits to the man’s resume--all of which, collectively, should at least partly address the “talents” portion of our opening salvo. Of course, there are more details and more credits to the Darren Carter saga. And it should probably go without saying that he’s a very funny man, but in case it doesn’t he is.

  • JUNE 30 | BREAST CANCER AFRICAN AMERICAN AMBASSADORS
Breast Cancer Support Organization Seeks Ambassadors Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) recently did a survey about how women living with advanced (metastatic) breast cancer seek information, support and practical help.

Some of the women who completed the survey on paper had different preferences and needs than those who took the survey online. Because they want to ensure that all voices are heard, they are looking for more women to complete the survey in writing and return it by mail using a pre-paid envelope. Please help them by acting as an "ambassador" for LBBC and let women who might be eligible know that they can contact LBBC and request a copy of the survey. All completed surveys must be postmarked on or before June 30, 2008.

  • JULY 1 | THE 4 R MOVEMENT PRAYER & PRAISE RALLY
This is the launch of a new God inspired movement - THE 4-R MOVEMENT!

Let us be resolved and committed to the youth of our city, surrounding areas and ultimately the nation! The church and community have sat back long enough and allowed MTV and BET to define the norms for our youth. As a result, teen pregnancy, abortions, sexually transmitted diseases, acts of violence, depression and suicides are rising at an alarming rate. We have allowed movies and music filled with every kind of ungodly lie from hell to be accessible to them 24/7. It is time we take action! It’s TIME TO DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL!

We need you and your youth group to help us reclaim this generation for Christ! In order for us to effectively stand against the enemy we must UNIFY! This is about taking back a generation Satan has claimed as his. We believe this will change the future of young people in the central Texas area. The enemy has one united purpose to kill, steal and destroy our future; we cannot sit back and continue to let this happen! Our individual efforts are great but those efforts by themselves cannot compare to a unified effort to reach our youth. This is not about a particular church or person, it is all about the YOUTH of our city, state and ultimately the nation. If not now, when? If not us, who? Check out our website for more information.

juneteenth - are you for it or ag'in it?
i definitely think we should continue to celebrate juneteenth in recognition of the ending of slavery.
seems to me we should celebrate it on the actual date slavery ended; versus celebrating the date 2 years later when word reached texas.
im not sure on this one. i can see both sides.
