  • JULY 24 | CNN PRESENTS BLACK IN AMERICA PART II
    In the "The Black Man," Soledad O'Brien evaluates the state of black men
    in America and explores the controversial topics of black men and
    fatherhood; disparities between blacks and whites in educational, career
    and financial achievement; and factors leading to the dramatic rates of
    black male incarceration. The documentary also examines the achievements
    of black men and the importance of the positive influences of black
    fathers. Premieres on Thursday, July 24, 8 p.m.

  • JULY 24 | SUMMER SLAM
    Urban Breakthrough Enterprises, Inc. presents its 2008 Summer Slam for high school students from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. It will be held at the Blackhawk Amenity Center located at 3111 Speidel Drive. It will include swimming, games, a college student panel discussion, and a brief overview of the organization.   • JULY 25 | EAST END FOURTH FRIDAYS
    Please join us for East End Fourth Fridays featuring live music, food,
    vending, and kids programs. The headliner for July's East End Fourth
    Fridays: Matthew Robinson and The Texas Blues Band. Returning to the
    stage will be the Kenny Dorham Youth Jazz Workshop Jam, showcasing some
    of Austin's best young musical talents. Also performing is the Hayes
    McMillan Band, playing original, blues-inspired rock. Hayes, age 10,
    will be singing and playing guitar, accompanied by veteran performers
    Tony Redman, David McEvoy, Harold McMillan, & Derek Hanson.  Events
    start along the street at 5:30 p.m. and doors at Kenny Dorham's
    Backyard, located at 1106 E. 11th Street, will open at 6:00 p.m. A
    donation of $5 to $10 is suggested.

  • JULY 25 | BALLOON PARTY AT THE ARCHIVE LOUNGE
    Come early, stay late, and capture a balloon at the Archive Lounge. The
    balloons have prize tickets inside of them. Between the excellent soul

    Austin area annual Youthfest 2008 will be held on Saturday, July 26,
    from 3-9 pm and Sunday, July 27, from 3 - 7 pm, at the Delco Activity
    Center located at 4601 Pecan Brook Dr. & Springdale Road.  YOUTHFEST is
    an awesome Christian Musical event! It offers an opportunity for Central
    Texas youth to come together and worship, and praise God in their unique

  • JULY 30 | WOMEN IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE RECRUITING SEMINAR
    On July 30, 2008, from 7 to 9 pm, the Travis County Sheriff's Office
    Women in Partnership will hold a recruiting seminar for women at the
    Community Room of the Sheriff's Office, 5555 Airport Blvd.  It is a goal
    of the Sheriff's Office to make the Office as diverse as the community
    we serve. That is why the Sheriff's Office Woman in Partnership and the
    Human Resources Unit has teamed up to sponsor this event.

    This recruiting seminar is a first of its kind event to introduce women
    into criminal justice careers including Law Enforcement, Corrections,
    Jail Medical and Dispatch. There will be speakers from all career fields
    of the Sheriff's Office who will be able to answer questions concerning
    a career at the Travis County Sheriff's Office. There will also be food
    and door prizes.  The seminar is open to everyone 18 years and older who
    are looking for a career in criminal justice at the Travis County
    Sheriff's Office.

    "Austin, Texas: East Side Blues" documents the legacy of East Austin
    blues. The work chronicles the thriving segregation-era blues music
    scene on East 11th and 12th St., as well as the contemporary state of a
    pre-gentrification East End. Please join us at 7:00 pm as we honor two
    of the musicians featured in the film: Ernie Mae Miller and Henry "Blues
    Boy" Hubbard. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at New
