"Austin, Texas: East Side Blues" documents the legacy of East Austin blues. The work chronicles the thriving segregation-era blues music scene on East 11th and 12th St., as well as the contemporary state of a pre-gentrification East End.

This hip-hop theater performance piece fuses the physicality of modern dance with high-energy spoken word and the sensibilities of street politics. This new word opera is a choreopoem that challenges and redefines taboos including race, sex, religion and politics, with the back-drop of a fading media: the radio.

Believe Beyond Boundaries is an awesome three-week theater and creative arts camp that is designed for middle and high school age youth.

This exciting camp provides a creative outlet for young people to create and develop their own dramatic projects from conception to production.

Come join us for an opportunity to create, develop and produce your very own creative or theater arts project!

Attendees will participate in workshops and activities conducted by local theater professionals, artists and representatives from local universities. Tour the backstage of a professional theater and television studio.

Attendees completing their projects will have the opportunity to perform, produce and or display their works to family and friends at BBB Camp’s closing ceremony.

JULY 24 | SUMMER SLAM

Urban Breakthrough Enterprises, Inc. presents its 2008 Summer Slam for high school students from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. It will be held at the Blackhawk Amenity Center located at 3111 Speidel Drive. It will include swimming, games, a college student panel discussion, and a brief overview of the organization. The cost is $20 which includes a t-shirt, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

YOUTHFEST is an awesome Christian Musical event! AUGUST 1 | AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION NATIONAL YOUTH ADVOCATE

American Diabetes Association is now accepting applications for 2008-2009 National Youth Advocate. The National Youth Advocate works in close coordination with Association staff to communicate diabetes advocacy messaging to elected officials and the public at large.

The NYA position is open to young people ages 12-17 years old with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Candidates should have either experience or a willingness to speak publicly at various events throughout the year, and should be available to travel with a parent or guardian.

AUGUST 24 | WORTHY OF WORSHIP- COME OUT & JOIN GEORGE POWELL & FRIENDS

George Powell and Friends present An Evening of Praise and Worship on Sunday, August 24th at 4:00 p.m. This concert will be held at St. James Baptist Church, 1812 EM Franklin Avenue.

The theme for this celebration is “Worthy of Worship” and will feature a variety of musical performances that will not only showcase George Powell and Friends but the versatility of Austin’s talents as well. The celebration will include performances by Claudia Williams and the St. James Baptist Church Mass Choir, Chris Spivey and Nu Destiny, Spoken Word by Brett Lee, Christian Comedy by Rodney Geter, and Praise Dancing by Mt Sinai Praise Dancers.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are available at St. James Baptist Church and Mitchie's Gallery. SEPTEMBER 12 | GREATER MT. ZION WOMEN'S RETREAT: A BUTTERFLY EXPERIENCE

We would like to extend a personal invitation for all women 18 years and up to join us for our 2008 women’s retreat. Our keynote speaker will be accomplished author and sought after speaker, Michelle McKinney Hammond, who will explore our theme, “A Butterfly Experience….Metamorphosis”!

The purpose of this conference is to provide an opportunity to encourage, uplift and renew our hearts and minds as we embrace God’s purpose for us in every area of our lives. OCTOBER 11 | PEOPLEFUND'S 6TH ANNUAL EAST AUSTIN ECONOMIC SUMMIT

The East Austin Economic Summit is an annual event focused on Central East Austin’s rapidly evolving economy. It provides a formal presentation on East Austin’s economic outlook, development initiatives and business opportunities. At the same time, the community has the opportunity to voice its concerns, highlight opportunities and devise collaborative action plans that capitalize on economic opportunities and address community concerns. There will be breakout sessions on issues ranging from affordability, small business marketing, arts and education in East Austin.

This year we are excited to invite the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. They have recently completed a research piece on East Austin and we will be collaborating with them on our Economic Outlook Presentation.
