JULY 11 | SWAHILI LANGUAGE CLASSES AT THE CARVER MUSEUM!

Are you interested in learning an African Language? Come learn Kiswahili, the second most spoken language in Africa. Ever thought of taking an African Safari, Mission trip or vacation to Africa?

Beginning July 11, 2009, Kiswahili classes will be offered at the Carver Museum Library on 1165 Angelina St.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the great Lady Day's death,
David Stevens and the Morris Nelms Quartet host an elegant evening of anecdotes and the music of Billie Holiday.

The quartet features Alex Coke on flutes and sax, with Steve Schwelling (drums) and Pat Harris(bass). All proceeds benefit the St David's Music Endowment and The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians(HAAM).

JULY 27 | AFRICAN ARTS: DANCE & DRUM CAMP FOR YOUTH

Washington, DC-based Coyaba Dance Theatre will be in Austin and teach a West African Dance & Drum Camp for youth, ages 7 – 14 from July 27 – August 7 at St. James Episcopal Church, 1941 Webberville Rd.

Coyaba Dance Theater brings the spirit of Africa and its traditions to students through its teaching activities. Students will experience traditional West African dance and drumming depicting daily life of African culture.

Camp will take place from 12 – 4 each day, Monday through Friday for two weeks. Students will learn choreographic repertory from Coyaba Dance Theater that will culminate in a performance with the company at Akins High School on August 7 & 8. Costumes and drums will be provided.

The cost for the camp is $100.00. Full and Partial Scholarships are available, based on financial need. Contact the Dance Umbrella office for more information.

JULY 4 | FREE WATERMELON AT THE HYATT’S MARKER 10 ON THE 4TH OF JULY

The Hyatt Regency Austin, the Texas Watermelon Association, the Texas Pork Association and Go Texan will partner to host the first-ever Slice of Texas watermelon and pork promotion July 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the back patio of the Hyatt’s Marker 10 bar and lounge.

While en route to the fireworks display, stop at Marker 10 on the Lady Bird Lake trail and enjoy free watermelon slices as well as special menu items on the patio: fresh watermelon martinis, Texas pulled pork sandwiches with an arugula watermelon salad and refreshing watermelon skewers drizzled in local honey and aged balsamic vinegar will all be prepared by Hyatt Regency Austin’s SWB and Marker 10 chefs.

JULY 3 | SUMMER CINEMA SERIES FOR THE KIDS - FINE DINING FOR PARENTS

Don’t bother with a babysitter! Parents can have a relaxed gourmet dinner at the Hyatt's Southwest Bistro (SWB) with spectacular views of Lady Bird Lake and downtown, while the Hyatt entertains the kids for FREE with a hit children’s film and popcorn at 6:30 p.m. every Friday in July with the Summer Cinema Series. Come early, and the family can take a walk by the lake. The film, popcorn and parking are complimentary for SWB diners.

SWB offers unique dishes featuring select seasonal, local and organic items. Entrees include smoked local game hen with fried sweet potatoes, southwestern succotash, and tomatillo sauce, as well as pork chop with lentil, jicama and blue cheese salad, chayote squash and slow-roasted pear relish.
