Many children and parents are often told they will not live to adulthood. The maximum life expectancy for sufferers with Sickle Cell Disease is approximately 40 years of age. Marc lived to the age of 46. A recipient of numerous awards and achievements, he was most recently appointed to the United States Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Board in Washington D.C. The invitation to serve in Washington was extended to his wife Linda. She accepted the appointment. In 2003, he was awarded the Ray of Hope Award by Community Health Charities for his outstanding efforts in community service. The Texas House of Representatives initiated by State Representative Dawnna Dukes declared May 17, 2005 Marc Thomas Day in the State of Texas. Councilmember Danny Thomas presented to Linda Thomas a Distinguished Service Award for Marc Thomas posthumously from the City of Austin.
